Your Curriculum

VOCAL STYLE PREP I (MODERN POP): (3 Credits) From Billie Eilish’s haunting whispers to Adele’s soul-stirring belts to The Weeknd’s agile falsetto, today’s pop vocals demand both adept technicality and raw authenticity. This course decodes the signature techniques behind these iconic voices, equipping you with a versatile commercial toolkit. You’ll explore breath control for intimate verses, mix voice development for explosive choruses, and the rhythmic precision that defines modern R&B-infused pop. Through analysis of current hits and crafting your own studio-ready performances, you’ll develop the vocal flexibility to integrate this genre into your portfolio.

VOCAL TECHNIQUE: BUILDING YOUR FOUNDATION: (3 Credits) Every great vocal performance begins with a strong technical foundation. This course equips you with the essential tools for healthy, sustainable singing through focused study of breath, posture, and tone production. You’ll develop a scientific understanding of your instrument while cultivating practical skills that serve all vocal styles. From diaphragmatic breathing to resonant tone placement, you’ll establish reliable techniques that empower your artistry while protecting your voice for the long term.

REAL DEAL REHEARSAL I: (1 Credit) Students work together in a rhythm section format, under the supervision of a faculty member, to rehearse a series of practical real-life situations, the mastery of which is essential to every performing rhythm section musician.

SONGWRITING I: (3 Credits) Your favorite songs didn’t just appear—they were crafted. Songwriting I pulls back the curtain on how hits are made, teaching you to shape raw ideas into memorable music. Whether you’re starting with lyrics, a beat, or a melody, you’ll learn to build songs that move people. By breaking down classics and starting to create your own, you’ll develop a songwriter’s toolkit—and find your unique voice in the process.

ANCHOR TEACHER PRIVATE LESSONS: (2 Credits) Students are assigned a private instructor who acts as the student’s principal teacher and advisor regarding the tasks presented in the overall program. Students meet with this anchor teacher on a weekly basis and focus on both the reading and technical skills required by each foundational style.

KEYBOARD SKILLS I: (1 Credit) This class coordinates with Applied Theory I and begins the study of keyboard technique with an emphasis on developing basic chromatic and major scale and chord performance skills.

APPLIED THEORY I: (2 Credits) Applied Theory I is the first of a three-course sequence designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in the principles and practices of music theory. This course explores the fundamental elements of music, including notation, rhythm, scales, keys, intervals, chords, and harmonic progression. Students will develop essential skills in music analysis, ear training, sight-singing, and keyboard harmony.

EAR TRAINING & SIGHT SINGING: (1 Credit) This course builds essential musical literacy through sight singing melodies, notating rhythms, and identifying intervals/chords by ear. You’ll develop the skills to accurately reproduce what you hear and read—a foundational toolset for performers, songwriters, and producers alike.
